Our Monday, February 13, 2012 Meeting |
| Local Food and Urban Farming |
We look forward to welcoming three speakers to our February meeting. This topic is on the forefront of newscasts, magazine and newspaper articles, and the internet.
We will welcome speaker Emmanuel Pratt with the Sweetwater Foundation whose organization focusses on turning waste into a community resource by engaging community groups in the education of aquaponics and sustainability using urban agriculture as an empowerment tool.
Michael Thompson is with the Chicago Honey Co-Op and runs a self-sufficient beekeeping cooperative in Chicago that produces more than just honey: they also provide healthy food and education for neighborhood residents. Fifty hives are located in vacant lots, mostly in blighted neighborhoods, and nine hives on four downtown roofs including the roof of City Hall.
Jerry Adelman is with Openlands, which helps protect the natural and open spaces of northeastern Illinois and the surrounding region to ensure cleaner air and water and protects natural habitats and wildlife. Founded in 1963 in Chicago, it’s one of the nation’s oldest conservation organizations. It has helped protect more than 55,000 acres of land for parks, forest preserves, land, urban farms and community gardens. |
